Reading Diary B: Russian Folktale

  • there was an old man and an old woman that both grew cabbages
  • the man grew his cabbage in the cellar and the woman in an ash-hole
  • the cabbage in the cellar grew up to the floor but the cabbage from the ash-hole withered and did not grow
  • the cabbage stalk grew to be very tall and the old and he would climb it and when he would get to the top he would see a mill and when the mill is done turning there is a pie with a stewed grain that would come out on top
  • after the old man would see this he would slide down the stalk and tell the old lady about the mill and the pie
  • he wanted to take the old lady with him so he told her to slip into a sack and he would take her up
  • they were going up and the old man was holding the woman in the sack by his teeth but as he was going up he accidentally let the sack slip and it fell
  • when he went down to look at the sack all he could find within in was very tiny bones and he began to cry
  • that was when the fox came in and he asked the old man why he was crying and the man told him about the old lady
  • the fox gave him a recipe of how he could fix the old lady but the fox told him not to look into the sack
  • the old man became impatient and would ask the fox how it was going
  • the fox would say that it is coming along at the end the fox told the man to open the door but he fox ran out immediately
  • when the old man looked around he did not see the old lady all he was were her bones cleaned up and the recipe eaten up
